Can people with Diabetes Mellitus never have concentrated sweets (ie: candy bars, sodas, etc.) ?

People with diabetes may have 'sweets' but in moderation as long as the diabetes is well controlled.

ah! that is a very old fashioned concept! the Endocrinologist at UNM hospital said to never feel a craving. If I wanted something to have a small serving of it occasionally. He was speaking of chocolate cake, but that goes for anything you might want to have. Cravings get the upper hand in any form of food control. whether for losing weight or for a medical condition. When we crave a food type, we usually pig out on it rather than controlling the craving. So if we have a tiny bit of like chocolate candy bar once a week, or some soda, we can control the cravings for such things much better. There are no more laws that say we cannot have anything that is sweet or sugary! We can have whatever we wish occasionally. It helps if you can count grams of carbohydrate and compensate for the goodie by deleting a serving of maybe bread? I know people who don't eat bbq sauce because it is a bit sweet even tho it only has 1 tablespoon sugar per gallon of sauce!
3 :
Yes. As long as they are under control and able to give insulin to make up for it. In fact, sugar free candies have just as much carbs as regular candy. Soda is a gray area though. It's fine when the diabetic is low because it will bring up the blood sugar fast but otherwise, it's best to drink diet soda (or stuff like CocaCola Zero).

Differentiate between diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus

Diabetes Mellitus is caused by the lack of (or insufficient) insulin. This is when the body is unable to handle the standard amounts of sugar in a normal diet. Obesity, Heredity, stress and drugs are also common factors that can lead to diabetes mellitus. The required diagnostic tests are a Fast blood sugar-24hr test, a post-prandial test and a Glucose tolerance test. The treatment requires the correct sugar/insulin intake and medication to prevent its progression. It also includes a change of diet. On the other hand, Diabetes insipidus is indicated by the lack of the hormone vasopressin or the inability of the kidneys to respond to it. It is not connected with either sugar or the lack of it. The diagnostic tests as well as their treatments too are entirely different. The tests needed to diagnose Diabetes insipidus are a Water deprivation test and a vasopressin test. The most important part of the treatment is to replace vasopressin (usually with its synthetic counterpart desmopressin) also fluid intake and urine must be balanced. Hope this helps.

If Type 1 diabetes mellitus depend on external insulin for control, what did they do before insulin discovered

Eat low amounts of sugar

Try to eat a low carb diet - if any carbs at all.. but yes eventually would die of complications, pretty quick too. Most things in your body eventually break down into glucose, what your body needs to run, but because of the lack of insulin, it stayed in the blood stream. I remember my endo telling me that w/o insulin (at the time I was diagnosed) I would have been dead in a year without the creation of insulin outside the body. Scary times.. we're pretty lucky. I'd rather be diabetic now, then back then, that's for sure!
3 :
They used to be put on a low or no carb diet. They lived as long as their body could hold out and then they died.
4 :
Those who had diabetes before synthetic insulin was developed were almost certain to have a short life span. If they were able to control it by diet, they stood a better chance, but even in 1972 my grandfather died of diabetes-related disease. It increased (and still does, if not treated) your risk of heart attack, stroke, gangrene, blindness, and many other diseases.
5 :
Check out diabetes history on line. It is very interesting. Prior to the 1920s, kids with diabetes could only eat veggies boiled and rinsed 3X. They usually starved to death. I have a first addition book on diabetes by Dr. Joslin who clearly states that medication is of no help in controlling diabetes.
6 :
Yes, in fact, they just died. The brain is one of the human organs that can only use glucose for food. Because insulin is the only way to move glucose from your blood to your cells, they basically starved to death once they stopped producing insulin.

Can aspartame consumption cause sweet urine and therefore be mistaken for or mask diabetes mellitus

Can aspartame consumption cause sweet urine and therefore be mistaken for or mask diabetes mellitus?

No it does not change your urine. It will not cause any mistakes regarding diabetes nor will it mask diabetes.
2 :
This is so funny. I can just see the chemist tasting it and then tasting a sugar sample to compare. Yuuckk!!
3 :
Neither. Non-diabetics will never have a blood sugar so high that glucose spills into the urine no matter what they eat. Glucose should not be present in the urine, except for very rare circumstances like with severe infection and/or trauma.
4 :
I have heard of the opposite - in some people your body taste something sweet, releases insuln to use up the sugar even though there's no extra, so it uses what it finds = low blood sugar. I used to drink a lot of Diet Cola and it got to the point where 1/2 hour after finishing a glass my sugar DROPPED had to eat or pass out. This is not good because then your actually eating more and can gain weight.

Metabolic syndrome... aka syndrome X. It's where the accumulation of lipids interferes with the action of insulin causing what is known as insulin resistance or impaired glucose tolerance. They're all related to poor diet and lack of exercise.... http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/conditions/metabolic-2.html http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/metabolicsyndrome.html http://www.medicinenet.com/metabolic_syndrome/article.htm
2 :
high blood sugar over several years causes buildup around the heart (cholesterol) in the blood vessels. Most doctors will start you on cholesterol meds at early signs of cholesterold problems so the problem doesn't get any worse. Best bet is to watch the fatty meats and greasy foods....try to watch the saturated fats in foods, trans fat, and cholesterol.

if a person has untreated diabetes mellitus what respiratory pattern would they have

if a person has untreated diabetes mellitus what respiratory pattern would they have?

Usually accelerated b/c the whole body will be over working to keep up. You will also usually have gum inflammation and gum trouble and potentially bone loss/gum disease, mouth wise. This is a symptom many undiagnosed diabetics have.
2 :
I am not sure what respiratory patterns have to do with high glucose levels?? but then again, couchpotato disease doesn't get exercise, over eats bad foods, and doesn't stress their lungs more than moving the controls of some electronics or other. My breathing and exercising were no problem until I started taking all this chemical junk to control the glucose levels.
3 :
They may have no pattern. The respiration's can be perfectly normal.
4 :
In untreated diabetes mellitus, ketoacidosis can develop. This means the blood is acidic due to overproduction of ketone bodies. This drives deep sighing, the body's attempt to breathe off the extra ketones.
