My very first Diabetes Nurse was diabetic. She's almost 60 now. She is overweight, but not obese, and she is blind in one eye because of her diabetes. I have a friend who is nearly 55 now. He's been a type 1 diabetic for 50 years. He's pretty brittle as well. He suffers from restless leg syndrome, and his doctor believes that it is due to his diabetes. No one I know or have known has died, or is mortally ill due to diabetes. Good question!!

I met some one who had been a type 1 diabetic for 51 years when I had been a type 1 diabetic for more than 49 years. That was in November of 2004, I'm still here, kicking, and I can be pretty feisty when I'm online. ;-D Mary Tyler Moore was 40 Years old when she was finally diagnosed as having type diabetes in 1969.

There are some interesting findings on how chocolate can help with diabetes, type 1 & 2. RAW chocolate helps with inflammation of the cells. Through clinical trials they determined that the cells became more receptive to insulin (type 2) and that the beta cells(in the pancreas?) began to secrete some insulin again (type 1). Chocolate is amazing in it's raw natural form. The commercial candy companies took a perfect product and messed it all up. It must be raw (uncooked). Heating it kills most of the beneficial nutrients. This chocolate is raw, it is not bitter. It is wonderful. My niece has type 1 and has added this to her diet. I firmly believe that our bodies naturally crave to be balanced and healthy. We need to find the right things to help with that process. Also, Yes, this chocolate is recommended for diabetics. No refined sugar, no caffeine, no preservatives, no waxes or fats added. They combine the two most powerful antioxidant foods on the earth, cocoa and acai berry. Take a look at these two sites. www.mydrchocolate.com www.eatwellchocolates.com email me if you would like to talk more.

This sounds like my daughter..... Keep real good watches on levels...Plan meals that are perfect calories ect...No junk in house if so hidden for a weekend movie snack (not by u sorry)...You need to find a awesome Dr. in your area asap...that will keep close eye on you and teach you the sliding scale..Or introduce you to a pump that also will improve you.. Good-Luck my email is ipswanted@yahoo.com if you need any help. I've been doing this for many years :)
2 :
As with any medical condition, talk to your doctor for the best information about controlling your blood glucose levels with your insulin. Only your doctor / medical professional can adjust medication dosages, prescribed secondary medications, etc. to help with your situation. Don't try to treat / adjust medication on your own. Diet and exercise are very important in controlling your diabetes so watch what you eat and stay active. Talk to your doctor about recommending you a registered dietician or nutritionist to help with your meal planning needs. Good luck and best wishes...
3 :
Type 1 diabetes is not managable on one dose of insulin. If you want to manage it well, it takes either a pump, or at least three shots a day. One shot will lower you some, but not acurately take care of the spikes through eating, or the lows through exercise, since you get the same amount of insulin all day. Multiple daily shots or a pump allows you to change the amount you have at different times of day, more closely mimicking a well pancreas.

Any illness will cause insulin resistance, increasing blood sugar.
3 :
Any illness, virus or bacterial, can cause DM symptoms to be intensified. With this virus, you will have to watch for infections of the lesions. And just monitor your blood sugar well for fluctuations.
4 :
herpes zoster (shingles) will not effect your diabetes at all unless you stop eating properly or start some medications Diabetes is an insulin ,pancreas related illness Herpes zoster is skin and nerve, cell related illness Diabetes can do nerve damage if left unchecked or the stress you have worrying about the herpes zoster can effect your sugar levels So stop worrying

Diabetes mellitus type 1 is marked by low insulin levels. In the liver, low insulin levels lead to increased

Diabetes mellitus type 1 is marked by low insulin levels. In the liver, low insulin levels lead to increased?
glucose due to the lack of conversion into glycogen. In fat and muscle cells, low insulin levels lead to increased glucose levels due to the lack of glucose transporters on the cell surface. Which of the following scenarios provides the best explanation for this? a) Insulin uses different receptors to elicit different responses in liver as compared to muscle/fat cells b) The insulin pathway that activates glucose transporters in muscle/fat cells deactivates glycogen biosynthesis in the liver c) Muscle/fat cells and liver cells have different transducers and responders available to be utilized by the insulin pathway. d) GLUT4 is only found in liver cells e) Liver cells use G-protein coupled receptors while muscle/fat cells use tyrosine kinase receptors

In the absence of insulin, glucose remains in the blood and causes hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). The liver is unable to metabolize the glucose and turns on the pathways for glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. These pathways then produce additional glucose from glycogen, amino acids and glycerol. So in a nutshell the answer to your question is B.

Does elevated blood sugar in a person with diabetes affect physical coordination & judgment

Does elevated blood sugar in a person with diabetes affect physical coordination & judgment?
If a person who suffers from diabetes mellitus type II experiences temporarily elevated blood sugar, does this affect their ability to drive, operate machinery etc? Thanks to everyone who answers.

1 :
A mild elevation is usually fine. When this happens the person will feel hunger, thirst, and need to pee a lot. If it get even higher, the person my experience fatigue or blurred vision (acutely, other stuff happens a little more long term). In extreme cases, this could eventually lead to shock and comma. Hypoglycemia or low sugar is more of a medical emergency, high sugar can also cause problems and yes, impare driving etc.
2 :
I would say it does, depending on how high it goes, it can also affect weight, as you will begin to lose and not know why? This is a very dangerous situation as it can also destroy internal organs, keep your sugar levels as close to normal as possible to avoid complications!
3 :
if it is real high like 300 or more then yes for sure. Sometimes when I am in the 200 's I can tell I am "off"
4 :
Yes it does

My mother is a type 2 uncontrollable diabetic and it can be a very tricky thing. Sometimes it gets so out of control that she doesn't know if she's in this world or the next. So it does affect your ability to drive, operate machinery, think or make reliable decisions. My mom is only 41 so I know this isn't old age causing her these problems and as soon as I bring her diabetes under control she's back to normal. It doesn't happen to her very often but when it does you just know what causes it. It also depends on high elevated the blood sugar gets also, if too high instead of causing you the inability to do certain things it might just put you in a comma or kill you. The best thing to do is regulate it and take whatever you have to so you'll never have to find out what it can do to you.

How does exercise stop diabetes mellitus

how does exercise stop diabetes mellitus?

Diabetes - 3 Answers

1 :
Exercise doesn't stop it, but it can help it. Exercise improves one's insulin sensitivity. Type 2s are usually insulin resistant, and sometimes insulin deficient, so they don't have enough natural insulin on hand to handle certain types of food. Exercise can help the body utilize the insulin there, so even if the person is resistant or deficient or both, he or she will need less insulin as a result of the exercise. Also, exercise can aid in weight loss, and weight loss improves insulin resistance.

What are the s/s and nursing interventions of diabetes mellitus

what are the s/s and nursing interventions of diabetes mellitus?
s/s= signs and symptoms. THANK YOU

1 :
Do you have some sort of medical-surgical book for nursing school? The one we use is called Medical-surgical Nursing: Critical Thinking for Collaborative Care, by Donna D. Ignatavicius and M. Linda Workman. It's really easy to find any disease/condition you are looking for, signs and symptoms, and nursing interventions very quickly. If you don't have one or a similar book, go on eBay and find a cheap used one. It will be a lot faster in the future than trying to scavenge YAnswers for the answers from people who probably don't know what they're talking about.
2 :
i definitely would NOT want you as my nurse if you were doing all your homework through Yahoo Answers. you need to find a textbook like the rest of us and work with that.
3 :
Hey im a nursing student and i have diabetes. Signs and symptoms include excessive thirst, very frequent urination, weight loss, excessive hunger, glucose in the urine (from a urinalysis or blood test). and obviously high sugar levels. Nursing interventions can include: pressure area care, checking feet and legs for ulcers, noticing any change in vision for the patient (or difficulty seeing) and referring them to the correct specialist, referring a dietitian to ensure a good diet is maintained and checking blood sugar levels as required. Also take note of someone who is already diabetic if they're frequently urinating and drinking to excess...it can indicate developed renal failure. Its difficult to prevent diabetes in an acute hospital setting...most people. there will already have it. It is more important to check for worsening things in relation to diabetic complications
