diabetes leaves too much sugar in the blood stream, simply stated, this damages blood vessels resulting in loss of circulation. Loss of circulation causes nerve damage and death, all kinds of nerves, especially sensory nerves.

the_only is right, IF (AND ONLY IF) the blood glucose levels and A1c levels are elevated. If blood glucose levels and A1c levels are controlled, there will be either no neuropathy nor any other complication, or if there are complications it will only be minimal.

yes, tell a long time diabetic has their blood sugars been fine.. diabetes is a disease of the circulatory system.. Circulatory and innnervation go hand in hand.. One example is an atrophied arm.. The arm is still getting blood but is nor innervated.. I have diabetic charcot foot. I have neurapathy in both of my feet.. Propioceptors area specialized nerve in your feet tells your brain what it needs for balance. I have no sense of balance because those propioceptors can't send the message.. Also when a neurologist checks your feet he wants to see what type of sensation you do experience.. Hot and cold..diabetics are warned not to get in bath water that is too hot.. Some diabetics not beiing able get scalded because they can't determine how hot something is by the sensation of their neurologically dead feet.. Myself my neurologist does a simple test with a safety pin.. last year I couldn't feel the pin prick from my foot up to my thigh .This year I felt the pin as it pricked my foot..Many diabetics get retinopathy which destroys the nerves to the eyes.. Is that enough sensations..
