I have never heard of this, but diabetics on phenytoin have to be closely monitored because it can cause blood glucose levels to rise http://www.medicinenet.com/phenytoin/article.htm
2 :
Side-effects: At therapeutic doses, phenytoin produces horizontal gaze nystagmus, which is harmless but occasionally tested for by law enforcement as a marker for drunkenness (which can also produce nystagmus). At toxic doses, patients experience sedation, cerebellar ataxia, and ophthalmoparesis, as well as paradoxical seizures. Idiosyncratic side effects of phenytoin, as with other anticonvulsants, include rash and severe allergic reactions. There is some evidence that phenytoin is teratogenic, causing what Smith and Jones in their Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation called the fetal hydantoin syndrome. There is some evidence against this. One blinded trial >needs documentation!<Italic text asked physicians to separate photographs of children into two piles based on whether they showed the so-called characteristic features of this syndrome; it found that physicians were no better at diagnosing the syndrome than would be expected by random chance, calling the very existence of the syndrome into question. Data now being collected by the Epilepsy and Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry may one day answer this question definitively. Phenytoin may accumulate in the cerebral cortex over long periods of time, as well as causing atrophy of the cerebellum when administered at chronically high levels. Despite this, the drug has a long history of safe use, making it one of the more popular anti-convulsants prescribed by doctors, and a common "first line of defense" in seizure cases. Phenytoin also commonly causes gingival hyperplasia due to folate deficiency. Due to patent expiration, phenytoin is available in generic form and several branded forms at relatively low cost, making it one of the more affordable seizure control medications. It is available in extended release capsules and injectable forms, though the injectable formulation is rapidly losing ground to fosphenytoin. Some generic formulations of phenytoin have been felt to be less reliable with respect to time-release than their branded counterparts. In some cases, this can be related to complications which arise between the alternative protein bond release mechanisms used in the generic versions, and those individuals with high metabolic rates.
3 :
No, diabetes is not a recognised side effect of phenytoin, that said it can affect blood glucose levels which need to be monitored whilst a person is taking phenytoin.

Quick question on diabetes and hypoglycemia

Quick question on diabetes and hypoglycemia?
Type 1 and type 2 diabetes is the lack of response to insulin or no insulin produced. So that would raise blood sugar right? Hyperglycemia? Where does hypoglycemia fall into diabetes mellitus?
Diabetes - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Sometimes too much insulin- too high a dose/not eating/ the diabetes not being very well controlled will cause the blood sugar to drop- causing hypoglycemia.
2 :
While patients who do not have any metabolic problems can complain of symptoms suggestive of low blood sugar, true hypoglycemia usually occurs in patients being treated for diabetes (type 1 and type 2). Patients with pre-diabetes who have insulin resistance can also have low blood sugars on occasion if their high circulating insulin levels are further challenged by a prolonged period of fasting. There are other rare causes for hypoglycemia, such as insulin producing tumors (insulinomas) and certain medications.
3 :
A diabetic has to give insulin via injections and sometimes they can give too much causing sugar levels to drop this can also be done by too much exercise/eating too little/ stress. Hyperglycemia only occurs when there isnt enough insulin in the body :)

It is rat poison that is supposed to cause diabetes in rats, and I assume humans too. The rat poison antagonizes nicotinamide metabolism thus causing diabetes.

Effects of self-compliance of diabetes mellitus

effects of self-compliance of diabetes mellitus?

Self compliance is the best and only way for a diabetic to stay happy.Diabetes is a life long ailment and life long medical supervision is impractical.
2 :
I agree with previous answer. In these responses I see a lot of people who seem to think there is nothing you can do. Completely the opposite. The New York Times had a recent article with 2 brothers who had diabetes pre WW II and are quite old now with no complications. All the people in the study who had lived a long time with diabetes did so because they managed it well. The old rule is "you can't manage what you can't measure". The people that do well keep records and use a monitor. This will tell you how you are doing. I've been able to drop one medication by 25% in 12 months and will discuss dropping the second medication on my next appointment. Although some people have a situation such as infection or other cause where they can't do much - most of us can really control blood glucose. It requires all 3 components: activity, (any activity - walking is fine but some activity must be daily); medication; and managing diet. There are so many questions on this I think I'll do a page. In the meantime start at www.diabetes.org

Who transmittits diabetes mellitus

who transmittits diabetes mellitus?

Diabetes - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
diabetes is not transmitted.
2 :
It's not transmitted, but it is multifactorial - it can be familial and passed from parents to offspring.
3 :
its not some sort of infectious stuff to be transmitted.. but then studies say it can be genetically aquired.
4 :
I agree with everyone else.
5 :
it is not transmitted it is a defected gene that u are born with that lies dormant until it is triggered by an illness. unfortunately, i know all too well it can skip generation and then it can also take the parents, children, and the brothers and sisters. in our case my son got it when he was 16 months old( he is 12years old now) and his father didn't get it until 2 years ago.
6 :
diabetes is a non-communable disease and u are not born with it ,in the lower part of your belly you have a thing called a pancreas that develops glucose when things goes wrong with it it either produces to much glucose or to little glucose......

What does Diabetes mellitus mean

what does Diabetes mellitus mean?

jst google it... u will get vast knowledge than i write few things which i remember.....
2 :
when the greek first discovered diabetes, they found out that people urinated a lot. these people that urinate a lot (polyuria) either have a sweet taste to their urine which means diabetes mellitus (mellitus means honey) or their urine is not sweet which diabetes insipidus (insipidus means without taste). diabetes mellitus is the diabetes you know, caused by elevation of blood glucose.
3 :
What is diabetes mellitus? Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as "diabetes," means "sweet urine." It is a chronic medical condition associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose into the urine, hence the term sweet urine. Normally, blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level. When the blood glucose elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level. In patients with diabetes mellitus, the absence or insufficient production of insulin causes hyperglycemia. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic medical condition, meaning it can last a life time. Over time, diabetes mellitus can lead to blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. Diabetes mellitus is also an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart diseases, and other blood vessel diseases in the body. Diabetes mellitus affects 12-15 million people (6% of the population) in the United States. The direct and indirect cost of diabetes mellitus is $40 billion per year. It is the third leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease and cancer. Points to remember Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Insulin produced by the pancreas lowers blood glucose. Absence or insufficient production of insulin causes diabetes. The two types of diabetes are referred to as insulin dependent (type I) and non-insulin dependent (type II). Symptoms of diabetes mellitus include increased urine output and appetite as well as fatigue. Diabetes mellitus is diagnosed by blood sugar (glucose) testing. The major complications of diabetes mellitus include dangerously elevated blood sugar, abnormally low blood sugar due to diabetes medications, and disease of the blood vessels which can damage the eye, kidneys, nerves, and heart. Diabetes treatment depends on the type and severity of the diabetes.

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
well diabetes is one of the major risk factors of cardiaqc diseases because it makes the endothelium of the vessels to lose it's working advantage status and become hard called atheroscleroses
2 :
It runs a risk for heart disease but if you exercise once a day for thirty minutes, it will keep you in top shape and prevent this from happening. :)
3 :
People with diabetes are at a high risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, loss of a toe or foot, and erectile dysfunction. But can be avoided by strict diabetes care. Statistic's says 2 out of 3 people with diabetes die from heart disease and stroke. But can be prevented by managing blood glucose level near normal, at most of the time.

Name a NON-DRUG product that a patient with diabetes mellitus needs.

Name a NON-DRUG product that a patient with diabetes mellitus needs.?

1 :
a multiple vitamin, calcium, and folic acid
2 :
food.
3 :
Omega 3-6-9 EFA's to reduce inflammation, antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E, Folic Acid, Magnesium, and a multivitamin. Since diabetics (Type 1's especially) have a higher risk of osteoporosis, they should add a calcium and Vitamin D supplement. Type 2's can add chromium to help decrease insulin resistance. Fibre supplements can also be beneficial for Type 2 diabetics, especially those who are not on meds and need to lose weight.
4 :
Vitamins (a good multi) Folic acid Calcium/magnesium and I suggest also two 500 mg cinnammon capsules daily. Cinnammon helps to keep blood sugar regulated, but that doesn't mean you don't take your meds. My son has diabetes and was taking four or five shots daily, but since we started him on the capsules he's down to two or three shots a day. You also need to rest when you can. Take good care of your feet, clean, dry and protect them. DO NOT drink alcohol..
5 :
lots of answers from lots of folks but only proven need is for vitiman D diabetic seem to lack this vitamin and it does have effects on the blood sugar level
6 :
Non-drug products: needles infusion sets IV prep Alcohol Wipes Glucose Tabs I could go on and on......
