Which condition might be present if a urinalysis detected glycosuria

Which condition might be present if a urinalysis detected glycosuria?
A. Cystitis B. Diabetes mellitus C. Renal calculi D. Nephrotic syndrome

1 :
B Glycosuria, or glucosuria, is the presence of glucose in the urine.
2 :
B. Diabetes Renal epithelial cells have a glucose transporter that re-absorbs glucose filtered from the blood. These transporters are saturable, that is, when you have elevated blood glucose levels more glucose is filtered than can be reabsorbed thus contributing to the appearance of glucose in the urine. This is a characteristic of someone with Diabetes mellitus. This condition partially contributes to the "classic symtoms" of diabetes... Polyuria (excessive urination), polydipsia, (excessive thirst), and polyphagia (excessive hunger).

What is the name of the medical condition of an asthmatic patient with a blood pH of 7.30

What is the name of the medical condition of an asthmatic patient with a blood pH of 7.30?
A. respiratory acidosis B. respiratory alkalosis C. metabolic acidosis D. metabolic alkalosis E. diabetes mellitus

A
2 :
Normal blood pH is usually kept within the narrow range of 7.35-7.45 so in the case of the asthmatic patient, he is not getting enough oxygen and CO2 is building up making the blood more acidic so respiratory acidosis, A. Respiatory alkalosis is the result of hyperventilation, someone is inhaling lots of oxygen and breathing out lots of CO2 so the blood pH rises. That is why people are supposed to breath into a paper bag to breath in more CO2. People with Type 1 Diabetes may suffer from ketoacidosis which is the buildup of acid due to the inability to properly metabolize glucose. This answer doesn't make sense because it doesn't have anything to do with asthma. metabolic acidosis is caused by an error of metabolism (increase in H+ perhaps caused by inability to breakdown molecules such as glucose or by the body's inability to produce bicarbonate).

Blood sugar is regulated by two pancreatic hormones, namely insulin and glucagon. When blood sugar rises

Blood sugar is regulated by two pancreatic hormones, namely insulin and glucagon. When blood sugar rises, ?
insulin is released; it binds to receptors and, through signal transduction, results in an increase in glucose uptake by cells, effectively lowering blood glucose. When blood sugar decreases, glucagon is released, binds to cell receptors, and causes glucose to be released into circulation. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder that results from excessively high levels of blood glucose. Type II diabetics have normal to elevated levels of insulin. What, then, might be causing the elevated blood glucose levels?
Biology - 2 Answers

1 :
The elevated glucose level is caused by the inability of the cells to "take in " the glucose and use it for energy. The glucose continues to circulate in the blood. It is more a problem with the receptivity of the cells that with hormone imbalances.
2 :
glucagon increases blood glucose levels Insulin lowers blood glucose levels Glucagon is your answer

How many people are aware that April 8th is National Cushings Awareness Day

How many people are aware that April 8th is National Cushings Awareness Day???
Cushing's syndrome (aka hypercortisolism or hyperadrenocorticism) is an endocrine disorder caused by high levels of the hormone cortisol. It is pretty rare and generally affects adults aged 20 to 50. Approximately 10 to 15 of every million people are affected every year. It was discovered by Harvey Cushing in 1932. SOME of the symptoms may be: rapid weight gain, moon face, excess sweating, easy bruising, purple or red striae, hirsutism, "buffalo hump", reduced libido, impotence, amenorrhoea, infertility, psychological disturbances, persistent hypertension, diabetes mellitus Cushings may be caused by pituitary and/or adrenal adenomas or disease, ectopics ACTH-secreting tumors, treatment with corticosteroids

Diagnois of kidney disease thru urine sampling

diagnois of kidney disease thru urine sampling?
okay so i had this lab wheree i had 4 urine samples. and i had to determine which had diabetes mellitus, insipidus and brights disease. we tested the urine sample with benedict solution, the pH of the urine, and mixing biuret reagent. How would i be able to determine which samples are with what disease. Anything in paticular i am looking for?

I am not too certain about the pH part but everything else I can answer... In normal condiditons there should be no traces of proteins or any type of sugars in your urine as the former is too big to go through the basment membrane and enter the nephron while the latter should be actively transported out while in the proximal convoluted tubule. protein or sugar presence will signfy that there is problem in normal kidney function.... The bendeict solution is used for the dection of reducing sugars like glucose...it should turn to a red colour for a positive result. If this is the case it means that there is glucose present in the liver, usually an indication of diabetes mellitus or improper liver function (usually the former) The biuret test tests for the dipeptide bonds...a violet colour indicates teh presences of proteins...in this case it would be brights disease... I'm not too sure about the pH one... but I do have a very educated guess. If you have diabetes insipidus...that means you are urinating more water than usual (a lot more) and do not have very concentrated urine. do a ph test and seew hich one is closest to nuetral ph (7) that would most likely be the diabetes insipidus sample... GL!

I need help with some anatomy questions

I need help with some anatomy questions?
Why must hormones like insulin and oxytocin be injected? Explain some of the dangers associated with overuse of anabolic steriods? Why does excess secretion of growth hormone in childhood produce gigantism and in adulthood acromegaly? Why are goiters much less common today than 100 years ago? Explain the difference between the effects of hypothyroidism in adults and in children? Explain the effects of hypoparathyroidism. Differentiate between diabetes mellitus 1 and 2?

Try using your book or an on line web site...as a biology prof, I'd be writing all night and doing your assignment. Now, is this learning?
2 :
Hormones need to be injected to bypass the digestive tract for faster and more complete uptake. Steroid make your connective tissue brittle, and interfere with normal sexual homones. Males testes shrink, women's clitoris grows like a penis. 'Roid rage. Hypoparathyroidism - calcium deposits in soft tissue, and calcium incorporated in arterial plaque.

Type I diabetes: you pancreas does not produce any insulin at all. You must have daily injections. This occurs mainly in young persons, and doctors are not exactly sure why. It may be due to an autoimmune problem where the immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells (insulin producing cells) of the body. It also may be due to some type of viral infection. Type II: Your pancreas produces insulin, but it either does not produce enough insulin, or it produces adequate to excessive amounts of insulin but your peripheral tissues have built up a resistance to it and don't use it properly. This type of diabetes is common in older people and obese people. Eventually, the beta cells in the pancreas wear out from overuse and can lead essentialy to a type I situation.
