A person's alveolar membranes have become thickened enough to moderately decrease the rate at which gases diffuse across them at any given partial pressure differences. Will this person necessarily have a low arterial PO2 at rest? During exercise? Briefly explain your answers. Also can you answer this question Patients with severe uncontrolled diabetes mellitus produce large quantities of certain organic acids. Predict the ventilation pattern in these patients and briefly explain why they show this pattern. Would their arterial PO2 and PCO2 increase or decrease?

the first one, im not sure, cant recall. the second one: CO2 is an biological acid because it interacts with the a bloodbound enzyme called carbonic anhydrase. this turns CO2 into carbonic acid and accounts for about 70% of all the CO2 transported in your blood. Diabetes patients often develop ketoacidosis which lowers the pH of their blood due to those organic acids. To combat this, your body attempts to decrease the amount of carbonic acid in your blood by expelling CO2 through your lungs. to do this, you need to increase your breathing rate to increase the partial pressure of O2 and decrease it for CO2. Since atmospheric CO2 is lower concentration than arterial CO2, quickly exchanging the air in your lungs will expel that higher conc. of CO2 out of the body and bring in the lower conc. of the atmosphere. this will decrease the partial pressure in the arteries through diffusion. At the same time, arterial PO2 would increase for the same reasons, atmospheric PO2 is higher than in your blood.

A highsalt diet that restricts protein, phosphorus, and magnesium & increase fluid intake is a treatment for?
1) renal failure 2) struvite uroliths 3) diabetes mellitus 4) hyperlipidemia

not exactly sure, but it would cause your body to process electrolites, and flush the system... I would imagine it would be hyperlipidemia or renal failure, as i've never heard of #2 and having #3 i've been warned to avoid that kind of treatment... ;) good luck!!
2 :
2) has to be the answer. Mineral and protein restriction would fit with this answer and increasing fluid intake would also fit. Conciously increasing fluid intake would be a detriment to 1) and 3) and would not be a benefit for4)

This question is very poorly worded and constructed. Essential hypertension is high blood pressure where the cause is unknown or there is no specific cause. This is the most common type of hypertension.
2 :
Don't feel bad about how you worded your question. It's possible that you are anxious and what some information about the diagnosis and coding. The hypertension diagnosis code represents that there is a diagnosis of hypertension that is uncontrolled at the time with no identifiable cause. Here is a link to the American Diabetes Association and an article that links diabetes and hypertension. http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/complications/high-blood-pressure-hypertension.html

a patient complains of constantly desiring food and water, then having to urinate frequently.?
tests show normal adh levels. these symtoms suggest? A. diabetes B. cushing's syndrome C. diabetes mellitus D. panhypopituitarism

a and c because they're kind of the same answer, unless a is supposed to be diabetes insipidus (which would be indicated of the ADH levels were ABnormal.
2 :
The question fails to take into account that Cushing's causes diabetes mellitus as well. I could be A, B, C or D in real life, but I suppose the answer they are looking for is C, sadly. The endocrine system is not one where one symptom ever means x as when one hormone goes off, it can have a domino effect.

Why do anti-diabetic oral medications quit working

Why do anti-diabetic oral medications quit working?
I am a nursing major and am finishing up a final project about type 2 diabetes mellitus, I have one more question and I am stumped! I have looked all over the internet and haven't found a direct answer. So can any one help me? I need to know why oral meds for diabetes lose their effectiveness. (Not speaking about insulin btw, just oral medications.)

The only thing I can think of is that some oral anti-diabetics, like glipizide, work by causing the functioning beta cells in the pancreas to release insulin, which leads to a decrease in blood glucose. Over time, even people with well controlled DM 2 experience a deterioration of beta cells, decreasing the effectiveness of the medication
2 :
your body can come immune to them. if this happens you need to go to the doctor and start a different pill so your diabetes will not go crazy and you get sick.

Dont worry. first you need courage then treatment and after Pray to GOD. All will be OK. Any way Please visit this page you can all answers about your all questions. Get well soon!!! May God Bless You!!! http://thediabeteszone.com/
4 :
Diabetes is a disease that degenerates your body's ability to create/use insulin effectively. As it progresses, it becomes more and more difficult for the meds to control it. That's why so many people with long-time diabetes have to move to using insulin.

^I'm type 2. You probably know, type 2's make insulin but can't utilize it properly. There are many reasons pills become infective, for some there bodies become used to it and build up a tolerance. I was doing great on pills, down to a half a day, then I went through a very stressful year, as the stress got worse, the pills no longer worked, I tried everything including Byetta, nothing worked until I went on an insulin pump, I'm telling you this because stress plays a factor as well. Sometimes there is no answer. I also found this on the site below: Diabetes pills sometimes stop working after a few months or years. The cause is often unknown. This doesn't mean your diabetes is worse. When this happens, oral combination therapy can help. Even if diabetes pills do bring your blood glucose levels near the normal range, you may still need to take insulin if you have a severe infection or need surgery. Pills may not be able to control blood glucose levels during these stressful times when blood glucose levels shoot up
7 :
I am on oral meds for Type 2, aand from what I have read, sometimes a body can build up a resistance to the meds. It depends on what med it is, and the physiology of the specific person. Try looking at the American Diabetes Association website, or Diabetes Forecast (the magazine for the ADA).

develops diabetes mellitus...which type of diabetes mellitus is it likely to be? Gestational diabetes mellitus Type 1 diabetes mellitus Type 2 diabetes mellitus Rickets Goitre

Type 2

Type 2 A man can't get gestational diabetes because that's what some PREGNANT women get. Unless HE finds a way to get pregnant he safe there. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune(viral induced??) disease that attacks the pancreas and destroys the insulin creating cells. It has nothing to do with lifestyle Type 2 diabetes has genetic components, lifestyle components and sometimes just happens. It is by far the most common type of diabetes(90% or more) Rickets is a condition deriving from lack of vitamin C. It has to do with bone and nothing to do with diabetes Goitre??Goiters(England spelling perhaps). Anyway, a goiter is an abnormal growth of the thyroid gland. It could be due to a tumor but is more likely to be due to prolonged hypothyroidism. It has nothing to do with diabetes. Hope you get an A on the test. But, it's far more important that you learn this stuff-In my opinion, diabetes is the leading preventable treatable health problem in developed countries.

Can anyone make a concept map out of this

Can anyone make a concept map out of this?
John Rocke is a 45 yr old divorced man with no children. He has a history of diabetes mellitus and poor control of blood glucose levels. Mr. Rocke is unemployed and currently receives unemployment compensation. He lives alone is a second floor apartment. Mr. Rocke had developed gangrene in the toe and failed to seek prompt medical attention; as a result, a left below the knee amputation was necessary. Mr. Rocke is in his second postoperative day and his vital signs are stable. The stump is splinted and has a soft dressing. The wound is approximating well without signs of infection. He has not performed ROM exercises or turning since his surgery, complaining of severe pain. When the nurse goes into the room, he yells, "Get out!" I don't want anyone to see me like this" No one has visited him since his hospitalization. He is tolerating an 1800-kcal American Diabetes Association diet and is using a urinal independently. He is on blood glucose with reg. insulin subcutaneously.

Following hypophyectomy(removal of the pituitary gland) which of the conditions will NOT occur?
A. Sterility B. hypothyroidism C. diabetes mellitus D. diabetes insipidus
Cancer - 2 Answers

Sterility. The others can be managed with hormone supplements.
2 :
C. diabetes mellitus. There is no glucose control in the pituitary. However the pituitary does control fertility - LH and FSH (that would effect males and females) TSH would effect the thyroid and ADH would be the last one...
