Self compliance is the best and only way for a diabetic to stay happy.Diabetes is a life long ailment and life long medical supervision is impractical.

I agree with previous answer. In these responses I see a lot of people who seem to think there is nothing you can do. Completely the opposite. The New York Times had a recent article with 2 brothers who had diabetes pre WW II and are quite old now with no complications. All the people in the study who had lived a long time with diabetes did so because they managed it well. The old rule is "you can't manage what you can't measure". The people that do well keep records and use a monitor. This will tell you how you are doing. I've been able to drop one medication by 25% in 12 months and will discuss dropping the second medication on my next appointment. Although some people have a situation such as infection or other cause where they can't do much - most of us can really control blood glucose. It requires all 3 components: activity, (any activity - walking is fine but some activity must be daily); medication; and managing diet. There are so many questions on this I think I'll do a page. In the meantime start at www.diabetes.org
