For diabetes mellitus, the excessive sugar in the blood causes fluids in the surrounding tissues of the small blood vessels to influx into the blood stream causing increased blood volume. The increased volume is then sensed by the body's sensors, thereby making the kidneys work harder at disposing the excess fluid as urine. Hypertension may be due to increased plaque build up inside the wall of the arteries or it may be due to increased muscle tone of the arterial musculature causing them to constrict. These reasons leads to increased blood pressure or the term hypertension. The increased pressure is sensed by an area in the brain, which then signals several instructions to lower the blood pressure, and one of them is to encourage the kidneys to excrete more urine to decrease the pressure within the blood vessel walls.
